Maple + Spiced Rum Cranberry Sauce

Just a quick recipe today….

I came up with this delicious Maple Spiced Rum Cranberry Sauce for our Thanksgiving dinner a couple of weeks ago, and it got the family approval all around.

So, I thought I’d share it here for you to enjoy at your next holiday meal.

The combination of tart cranberries, sweet maple syrup, and a splash of rum takes this classic sauce up a couple notches and makes it just a little more special.

I think the reason it was so well received is because the extra flavours are subtle and the cranberry still shines.

Even the hardcore, pure cranberry sauce lovers at the table (you know, the ones that always prefer the stuff out of the can) were happy with this one!

Plus, it’s simple to make and can be prepared a couple of days ahead. Always a bonus.

And, if you have any leftover, you can use it up on turkey sandwiches or enjoy with your favourite cheese and crackers.

Sadly my bowl was found empty, no leftovers for me.  So I would probably make a double batch in the future.

Give it a try and let me know what you think.

Have a great weekend!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups fresh cranberries
  • 2 tbsp packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 small cinnamon stick
  • dash of ground cloves
  • dash of fresh ground black pepper
  • 2 tbsp spiced rum

Instructions

  • Add all ingredients except rum to a small saucepan and stir together.
  • Cook over medium heat, until mixture starts to boil.
  • Reduce heat to medium low and continue cooking for another 20 minutes, occasionally stirring and squashing cranberries with a spoon
  • Stir in the rum and cook for another 5 min.
  • Remove cinnamon stick and discard. Squash berries further if you desire.
    Set sauce aside to cool
  • The sauce can be made a couple days ahead and stored in the fridge until needed.
    Serve at room temperature

Note

This recipe works very well with the easy to find bags of fresh cranberries available at the grocery stores (at least here in Ontario, see image below)

I have not tried this recipe with frozen cranberries.

This is a very easy recipe, follow along:

STEP 1

ADD ALL THE INGREDIENTS TO A SAUCEPAN AND GIVE THEM A STIR.

BRING THE MIXTURE TO A BOIL, LOWER THE HEAT AND COOK FOR 20 MIN.

STEP 2

ADD THE RUM AND COOK FOR 5 MIN MORE.

REMOVE THE CINNAMON AND LET COOL.

SERVE AT ROOM TEMPERATURE.
